Simply put, an artist.2016-03-20 18.36.51

I flip between being an introvert and an extrovert. There are spans of months I want to hang out with everyone and eat food forever. Other times I find myself wanting nothing more than to curl up, throw some blankets over my head and read a book until the wee early hours–I used to break my bed time curfew as a kid to read. My mom didn’t know how or if to punish me.

A lot of my time growing up was spent in my own mind, painting illusionary settings to pierce my boredom. Fantasy, sci fi, renaissance; you name it. I remember AniMorphs was my first introduction to the idea of humans merging with animals. My fascination grew even more when I was gifted a little grey kitten for my 6th birthday.

I enjoyed a lot of time outside, taking both figure skating classes and rhythmic gymnastics. Thinking back to how I would cartwheel on a balancing beam or do an aerial twist off of a spring board makes me so nervous now. There was a day I was watching the birds fly overhead, and thought to myself, “I wonder what the view is like for them, of the neighborhood, of how small we look.” And so I climbed the 3 storey tree behind the fourplex, I climbed so high I resembled a cat that gets into places it can’t get out of. But the smell of leaves and the chill breeze on my face will never be forgotten.

In 1999 I suffered a trampoline accident, leaving me with a condition called idiopathic scoliosis. What this is is a curvature of the spine, either from birth or caused by traumatic physical damage to the muscles around the spine. I endure the latter on a daily basis, with frequent bouts of muscle tension, migraines, and numbness of my limbs. While I may not be capable of such physical activities as I was in the past, that can’t hinder my creativity.

Something I learned early on was the power of imagination through talent. Now, I don’t mean to say talent as something you’re born with. What I am referring to is the ability to translate something within your mind–energy firing rapidly between neurons–and giving it some form of physicality that can be shared with the world. Be it something eye catching that leaves us staring in awe while we take it all in, something audible that we can feel thrumming within our bodies or an aromatic meal that tickles our taste buds, I know now that the very performance of translating such ideas and passions into tangible forms is a talent in and of itself.

And to keep skills sharp, you must sharpen them with practice.

Day by Day

Working 9-5 (8-6 really, let’s be real) gave me insight to how many hours in a day, in a week and in a month I actually had for my own projects. When you have nothing going on, it’s easy to spend your days lazing around, playing the same game over and over, ordering in and generally not doing anything with yourself. This situation has happened to me several times between jobs and it’s hard to remind myself that no matter how lazy I feel, the hands of a clock never stop moving. So neither should I.

Neither should you.
